Commander in chief of the Iranian Army Major General Amir Hatami says the killing of 104 crew members from Dena destroyer will not go unanswered, following a US attack on the vessel in the Indian Ocean.
In a message released on Friday, Major General Hatami honored the Iranian sailors who were returning home after participating in an international military exercise.
He said the crew of Dena destroyer had completed a peaceful mission and were targeted while on their way back to Iran.
According to Hatami, the sailors were attacked despite not being engaged in a direct battle.
The Army chief described the incident as a tragic loss, noting that the sailors had been operating far from home in the Indian Ocean, near Sri Lanka, when the attack occurred.
The major general said the name of Dena and the sacrifice of its crew would remain a symbol of courage and dedication in Iran’s naval history.
He extended condolences to the families of the victims, the Iranian armed forces, and the nation.
He added that the army will defend Iran’s maritime borders and strengthen its naval power with even greater determination.
